A night out!

This is a picture at the restuarant where we ate dinner. On the right is Jessica, the girl who is also taking classes at the same time as me and Nicki, Jesse´s girlfriend who is from Ecuador and lives outside the city.

Last night after class, Jessica and I decided to go out and meet up with my brother, his girlfriend and their other friends. This is a picture of Jesse and his friend from school.

Centro Historico

My favorite part of this picture is probably the guy in the Ozzy Osbourne tshirt. Flash back to Senior year at Loomis.
More protestors.

There was a protest outside of the president´s house while we were there. In this picture you can see all of the policemen lined up and the protesters walking toward the house.

While we were walking down the street, my teacher pointed out this porch of an artist who lives in Quito. He created these figures as a re-enactment of a scene from Don Quixote. This is the angel that is said to watch over and protect the city of Quito.

I have Spanish class everyday from 2-6 PM and sometimes it gets a little boring to sit one on one with a teacher for four hours straight. Yesterday we decided to go to El Centro Historico for part of class which is an area of the city where there are a lot of pretty churches and some touristy things to see. This is La Iglesia San Francisco.

This is where I live.

My bedroom. The first night I got here I didn´t get in until 12:30 and my host mother showed me my room. Suprisingly, I was able to fall asleep pretty quickly. I also have my own bathroom which is nice.
This is the view from outside my house. You can see some of the mountains in the background. It´s on a busy street called La Gasca and there are always tons of buses and taxis that go by. There aren´t really bus stops here but you just hold out you hand and the bus will stop for you. There is a driver and then another guy who stands at the door and yells out the bus route.
When you want to get off you give your 25 cents to the guy hanging out the door and the bus will stop. It´s actually a better system then waiting for the BX12. This is the front courtyard of my house. No one uses the door you can see in this picture but if you keep walking down the hallway there is a door to the kitchen. If you keep walking past that, you get to my room which is seperate from the actual house. It´s kind of like a little apartment in back of the house.

This is the front door to my house. The street I live on is pretty steep which you can see in the next post and it´s about a 25 minute walk to my school. The altitude is really noticable then when I get home and I´m out of breath just from walking up the street.

Swine Flu!

Everyone here is freaking out about swine flu. Everyone who worked in the airport wore a mask and they made all the flight attendants wear masks also. There has only been one case in Quito but there have been 35 cases in Guayaquil, which is the biggest city in Ecuador. On my brother´s flight a couple days later, they gave everyone on the plane masks also.

Getting There

Bye bye Miami! The weather delayed my flight two hours but we finally left after four hours in the airport. My flight to Colombia was empty! I had to whole row to myself. I barely made my connection on the way to Quito and my bags didn´t make it here until the next day.
